THE 1980'S FASHION

Big hair, red lipstick, ‘Like a Virgin', Pop, Rock & Metal, shoulder-pads, tight waists, too many bracelets and earrings bigger than your ears...welcome to the mighty 80's!

The 80's was a time of large prosperity and growth, especially in the big cities. All kinds of industries were now growing at high speed. As well as this, whole new generation of huge fortunes were being made, notably in media and the new computer industries.

FASHION

The 80's was a decade where music had a dominant influence on fashion. Various music cultures emerged and grew rapidly. Pop, Rock, Metal, R&B...they all had their influence on fashion resulting in Gothic, sportswear or big hair and bright leggings trends. Madonna was one of the greatest fashion icons and influences of the 80's. After her single Like a Virgin was released, millions of girls around the globe were inspired by her outspoken style. Casual wear became a big trend in the 80's with attires such as leggings worn with oversized sweaters or T-shirts becoming steadily more favourable.  

WOMEN

A feeling of prosperity and hope was felt in the new growth areas such as the service industries, where even especially women could profit. PR, journalism and the City were open to women like never before. Women were now empowered in all kinds of businesses and the second-wave feminism reached it's peek where it was no longer unusual to have women in the workspace. This was of course reflected in fashion. Shoulder-pads of various sizes were now to be seen everywhere. 'Power dressing' was now a strong trend with which women could make a statement of 'equality' towards men.
